Why F1 Banned This Genius Device

A lot of people know about the 2007 espionage involving Ferrari and McLaren. It involved spies, sabotaged fuel, stolen blueprints and the biggest fine in sports history. But off to the side another strange story was happening between McLaren and Renault.
Renault got their hands on the designs of a unique suspension component from McLaren. Supposedly, Renault's engineering team couldn't figure out the purpose of the device from the drawing they had "acquired."
So what is this device? Broadly, it's known as a mechanical inerter, but in the F1 world everyone still uses the codename originally given to it by McLaren, the J-Damper.

Wondering how much energy is dissipated by a J damper... and whether you could make an effective electric J damper for an electric car that had an alternator rotor for the flywheel which converted the rotation into electrical energy (or instead of a J damper used a linear alternator..) and fed that into the car's power system instead of wasting it as heat.

well I am I sure I fail to fully understand the subject, But why the F not use double spring in this case. One spring is compressing, other is stretching, same thing, just opposite. Maybe because it is much more complex to produce J-thingy, than to just make two springs, one stretching, other compressing.

On the claim that when you invent or discover shit you get to name it , WRONG. Here is my evidence against your claim. John Michell (/ˈmɪtʃəl/; 25 December 1724 - 21 April 1793) was an English natural philosopher and clergyman who provided pioneering insights in a wide range of scientific fields, including astronomy, geology, optics, and gravitation. Considered "one of the greatest unsung scientists of all time",[1] he was the first person known to propose the existence of Dark Stars not black holes in publication, the first to suggest that earthquakes travel in waves, the first to explain how to manufacture artificial magnets, and the first to apply statistics to the study of the cosmos, recognizing that double stars were a product of mutual gravitation. He also invented an apparatus to measure the mass of the Earth. He has been called both the father of seismology and the father of magnetometry. Princeton physicist John Archibald Wheeler coined the term in the 1960s. At the time, these objects were little more than theoretical talking points, and no one had discovered any evidence that they really existed. Bye the consensus standard they are dark stars and they had been theorized over 200 fucking years before .John Michell actually done lectures and talks on dark stars.

Questions for suspension designers - why not make the "mass" object in the Inerter a plate that spins in a fluid similar to how a piston moves in a standard dampener (shock absorber)? This would eliminate the need for it to be heavy. I hope this makes sense.

Cool to see this sort of video on interters, I actually wrote my uni dissertation on this (and magnetorheological dampers, another really cool suspension component) back in 2008 just as these stories were coming out (which was super convenient timing for me!). To put it simply, springs exert a force proportional to the distance between the end points relative to distance when the spring is at equilibrium, dampers exert a force inversely proportional to the velocity between the endpoints, and the inerter exerts a force inversely proportional to the acceleration between the two end points (so while you get the benefit of it fighting against the spring when it's in motion, you also have to compensate for the increased difficulty of initially compressing the spring due to having to spin up that flywheel). Really liked the visualisations, I've tried explaining how they work and people generally zone out pretty quickly so you've done a good job on making an informative & engaging video on the subject!
